![]() ![]() “‘Why don’t different species sit together?’ she asked. The information she had from her previous life does not always help her now, and she is on a steep learning curve (as is the reader): ![]() ![]() And behind every one of them, there was another, and another – an infinity of harmless instances of something new.” It was a troubling sight, and Sidra found other things to process as quickly as she could.” “As they passed through the station there, Sidra saw the weary faces of a family of Akaraks, digging through a trash receptacle with the help of their badly dented mechsuits. Outside the ship, she is cut off from instantaneous access to information (the linkings) and is overwhelmed by new and ever-present stimuli: Lovelace chooses the name Sidra for herself, and struggles with being in an environment that – unlike her ship – has no borders and which she cannot immediately and totally scan. It is a highly illegal procedure, and must be kept secret from everyone. #A CLOSED AND COMMON ORBIT ANDROID#Pepper and Blue have rescued the AI Lovelace from the ship of the first book, and installed her in a human replica android body – the kit. Jane, Pepper and Blue are human (maybe augmented) Owl and Sidra are AIs, and Tek is a Aeluon alien. The book has six main characters and takes place over two timelines: Jane and Owl in the past Sidra, Pepper, Blue and Tak in the present. For me, I read the first book five years ago, and the long delay before starting this did not impact on my enjoyment or understanding at all. This is the second book in the Wayfarers series, but can be read as a stand-alone. But overall it was a beautiful book about finding yourself and finding your family. I feel like the ending would be even stronger if we got to spend even a few more pages with the characters in those final moments of the story. ![]() I think my only complaint about this book is how quickly it rushes into the epilogue. And yet every time the pov switched I couldn't wait until we could go back to following the journey of the little girl who was stronger than everything standing in her way, and how easy it was to become increasingly attached to her bond with Owl and terrified of where that particular plot line would lead. It's amazing how heart wrenching all those flashbacks were when we knew exactly where the story would end. This book is split between two POVs, and as much as I enjoyed Sidra's journey of discovering who she is it definitely felt like the real heart of the story for me was in Pepper's perspective. Where the first book was more of a fast paced adventure story, this sequel felt more interested in slow paced exploration of what it meant to be sapient, what it took to find yourself when you felt so completely unprepared for the big, wide world awaiting you. I think that was the reason why I struggled a little at the beginning of this book. I definitely felt a little hesitant when I started reading this book, I got attached to Wayfarer's crew and I didn't want to completely switch to a different set of characters, even if a story about an AI finding her way as a new being in a completely unfamiliar to her world sounded very intriguing. Oof this was such an emotional read, it's been a few hours since I've finished it and I still feel a little overwhelmed from all the feelings the last half of the story puts the reader through. PRAISE FOR THE WAYFARERS 'Never less than deeply involving ' DAILY MAIL 'Explores the quieter side of sci-fi while still wowing us with daring leaps of imagination' iBOOKS 'So much fun to read' HEAT 'Warm, engaging, properly science-fictional, A Closed and Common Orbit is a very likable novel indeed' GUARDIAN 'The most fun that I've had with a novel in a long, long time' iO9 Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that, huge as the galaxy may be, it's anything but empty. Because Pepper knows a thing or two about starting over. Pepper, one of the engineers who risked life and limb to reinstall Lovelace, is determined to help her adjust to her new world. When she wakes up in an new body, following a total system shut-down and reboot, she has to start over in a synthetic body, in a world where her kind are illegal. Lovelace was once merely a ship's artificial intelligence. 'Chambers is simply an exceptional talent' Tor.com The stand-alone sequel to the award-winning The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.
